New Hampshire is one of the nineteen states that require some kind of vehicle inspection. These inspections ensure that the vehicles on the road are safe to drive and do not pose any avoidable dangers to drivers. Many mechanics and auto shops in New Hampshire are also state inspection stations, as we are at Broken Wrench repair. By offering state inspections, we can help our customers keep their vehicles safe and running smoothly, all conveniently in one place.
Passing inspection is a requirement to register your vehicle every year. Here’s a brief overview of what we check during state inspections.
Safety and Systems
The primary purpose of a vehicle inspection is to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive. We check the safety features, including headlights, turn signals, the horn, windshield wipers, windows, and mirrors. We also check the vehicle’s major systems, such as the brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust, fuel, electrical, and on-board diagnostics. Confirming that all these systems are in good working order ensures that you are safe while driving, as are the other drivers on the road with you.
Registration and Plates
After we check that the car is safe to drive, we check that its registration and plates are all in order. The registration must be current, and the license plates visible. Plate frames that obstruct the registration numbers or the state motto are illegal, as are plate covers that are colored, smoked, or tinted. In New Hampshire, all vehicles except motorcycles and trailers must have both a front and rear license plate. Your plates and registration must meet all these requirements to pass inspection.
Emissions
New Hampshire is also one of the sixteen states that require an emissions inspection. This inspection aims to reduce pollution and applies to all vehicle models manufactured in 1997 or newer. Anything from a loose gas cap to an emission component failure can result in a failed inspection. If your vehicle does fail the inspection, you have 60 days to resolve the problem and redo the inspection.
